Boobs on bikes

I meant to write about this on Wednesday when it was actually front page news, but I’m working on delayed EMT (Exhausted Mother Time), so you’ll have to bear with me.

Anyway, on the front page of the Dominion on Wednesday (or maybe Thursday), there was a large picture of a parade down Queen Street in Auckland celebrating an Adult Erotica Expo. Actually the image was more of a huge crowd, rather than the procession itself, looking at the highlight of the event - topless female porn stars.

Several things struck me about this image:

1. Was there really so little going on in the world that topless porn stars deserved to make front page of one of our respected daily newspapers? (Naive question, I know)

2. The story accompanying the image really played up how big and unexpected the huge crowd was. Literally thousands of people, the article said, crowded the streets to watch. But when I surveyed the faces in the crowd, they were almost exclusively male faces. The only person who was clearly a woman that I could see had a camera and a big-ass lens, and looked like a professional photographer, so she hardly counts.

Selective reporting at its best, so let’s be quite clear about this - thousands of men poured into Queen Street to watch some women that they don’t have a hope in hell of ever bedding show their tits.

3. The image shows us a nice butt shot (too flat for my liking, but hey!) but none of the boobs that we should expect with a huge headline entitled Boobs on Bikes. I mean, you know, if you are going to report a story about topless women, give us an image of topless women! (What? A little too risque for a respectable daily newspaper? Too big an outcry? Aww… geez, you guys have no guts.)

What amazes me about that is that somewhere in some crazy editor’s mind, a woman’s ass is deemed not as pornographic as her breasts.

4. The whole thing - article, image, event - confirmed for me what I have known for some time: Men do not mature beyond the age of 15.

Disclaimer: I have nothing against breasts, porn, erotica, bikes, parades or 15 year olds.
